I used it recently to photograph the grandkids as we were pulling them on a tube on a lake. I have a Nikon D7200. Setting the zoom to 500 mm, and the camera to continuous, and holding the camera while the boat was bouncing across the water, I was still able to get excellent sharp images. I was originally leery of the lens, but it worked great.

I am an amateur photographer and love wildlife. I am hoping Nikon might show some compassion on Black Friday with the price, although I realize it is decently priced for what you are getting

The lens collar also wouldn’t tighten down so I glued a half inch by 2 inch piece of emory paper to the lens barrel so that the inadequate tightening system would have more to grip onto.

Yesterday it was near zero and when I turned my VR switch off yet when I got my 5 extensive focus stacks into post it showed the VR did not turn off, that is why I’m hear searching for similar instances. A lot of work, cold, effort and gas for nothing. VR on a tripod ruins images, you didn’t mention that in the article.

I admire the fact the lens is versatile and is a prime zoom. I should be an owner now, however, I currently use a Tamron G1. It has served me quite well. Looking forward to getting a G2, Sigma Sport, or maybe Nikon after all.
Sample shots from Tamron G1:
1. Yellow-billed shrike
2. Giant kingfisher ? flyby

Yes, turn VR/IS off when on tripod/monopod. Activate only when handholding.

I ended up buying a Tamron 150-600 G2 instead and have been pleased with it. A lot of what you have written also applies to the Tamron and assists me in understanding the strengths and shortcomings of this lens as well. It also assists with developing appropriate techniques for the use of long lenses.
One question – you refer to the use of VR with the camera/lens on a tripod. Many advise to turn VR off when using a tripod. What is your advice about this? Also monopods – should VR be activated with monopods.?
